What's the word from Rollercon?

Who's going? Where are you staying? ..Crap like that.. Organizing men's scrimmages? Highlights from last year?

Kudos to all of you who participated. Its alwasy good to see men back out there again, even if its not "my derby", its still good to see some form of the sport alive and enjoyed by many.

I also owe the men a little bit of an apology. On a recent blog of mine I listed some of my favorite Derby team names and some how ignored the ever classic NEW YORK SHOCK EXCHANGE. Just a great name with great marketing appeal, connects to the region, and says something about the team. I wonder if my former home of Boston will be putting soem men on the track so that ever valuable New York v. Boston rivalry can continue on the track

If I had stayed in New England I happily would have caught it. But, alas, its too far for this Cali boy to travel. Hopefully someone will be able to put together some great video/dvd packages soon.

In fact, I am hoping every league is able to get that done soon.

Frank wanted to catch the men's derby bout on Fremont. He had torn his retina a few months back (during the derby reunion) and right before RollerCon they had him head down to a VA hospital in San Diego to finish up the procedure on his eye.

In other words, he had to miss the bout. I called him up to see if he was back yet, and invited him to come watch Hell on Wheels on Sunday. Frank is just about the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. I think we're going to have him sing a song or two before our next bout. He does a mean Sinatra, I'm told.

It's reasonable to assume he'll be catching any men's derby bouts at next year's RollerCon (assuming they are still open to the public).

Oh, did you know he taught Jackie Chan how to roller skate? And did skating stunts in two of his films? The Big Brawl (Jackie's first U.S. film) and one he did in Hong Kong that didn't get translated for release here.

Yes, Frankie always loved skating. He was really impressive. If i ever figure out how to upload video, I will have to put some of his work from the 1959 world series

That'd be cool.

Here's a bit of him skating with the L.A. T-Birds back around 1980 or so. He's #4, has longish hair. He jams in two jams towards the end. After one of the jams they put his name on the bottom of the screen (but it gets cropped off in the video). Other highlights: Georgia Hase as a red shirt manager, a man in a bird suit, fan with stuffed T-Birds, a fan that looks like Grizzly Adams. And Ronnie "Psycho" Rains. It's later-era Rollergames, so there's stuff like drop kicks, head-on collisions and such. Trivia question: Who is the announcer that appears onscreen at the end? I think I know...

I haven't seen any other footage of him on Youtube. I'm sure he'd love to see it if there's anything else out there.
